What it is
A World Heritage landscape of granite domes and stacked boulders, about 35 km south of Bulawayo. Caves throughout the hills hold San paintings. Cecil Rhodes is buried on a hilltop called World's View, which the guides will tell you a longer story about than a guidebook will.
Why go
Rhino tracking on foot with a guide, which is a completely different experience from seeing one from a vehicle. Some of the densest concentrations of rock art in Southern Africa. Also one of the densest populations of Verreaux's eagle anywhere, nesting on the cliffs.
When to go
Year round. April to August is cool and dry and the best for walking. The hills green up after the December rains and the painting sites get slippery when wet. It is high enough that winter nights are genuinely cold. Bulawayo is a long drive or a short flight from Victoria Falls, so this takes planning to include.
