What it is
A walled 18th-century fishing port on the Atlantic, with ramparts, a working harbour, a wide beach and a compact medina that is far easier to navigate than Marrakech or Fes. Two and a half to three hours from Marrakech by bus or car.
Why go
Sea air, seafood off the boats, and streets you cannot get lost in. It is the main kitesurfing and windsurfing spot in the country.
When to go
Good all year, and the reason to come in July and August when inland Morocco is unbearable. Understand what you are getting: the trade winds blow hard from roughly April to August, and afternoons on the beach mean sand in your face. If you want to lie still on a towel, this is the wrong beach. September and October are the calmest, warmest months.
