What it is
A run of sheltered bays along the northwest. Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy are long, calm public beaches with good snorkelling straight off the sand. Grand Baie, a few kilometres further on, is the island's restaurant and nightlife hub and the departure point for boat trips to the northern islets and for dolphin watching off the west coast.
Why go
This coast has the widest choice of places to eat that are not inside a hotel, the calmest water, and the shortest boat transfers. For a first trip to Mauritius, it is the easiest base.
When to go
Good all year; this is the driest and most sheltered part of the island. December to February is hot, humid and busy with local holidaymakers. If you want quiet, go south or east instead, and accept longer drives to dinner.
