What it is
Around twenty to twenty-five Grandidier's baobabs, some of them 30 metres tall and several hundred years old, standing along a dirt road roughly 20 km northeast of Morondava on the west coast. They are the remains of a forest that was cleared around them for rice and pasture. Morondava is reached by a one-hour flight from Antananarivo, or a hard 700 km drive of two days.
Why go
It is a twenty-minute stop that genuinely earns the photograph, at sunrise or sunset when the trunks glow and the light is low. Kirindy Forest, about two hours further north, is the place to look for the fossa, Madagascar's largest predator, and for the giant jumping rat.
When to go
May to October. Sunset is the busy time and there will be other people and vendors; sunrise is quieter. This is a stop, not a destination, so plan it as part of a Morondava leg alongside Kirindy or the Tsingy. The road is dust in the dry season and mud in the wet.
Most people stay 1-2 nights.
