What it is
A strip of forested ridges running north-south along the eastern border. Wli Falls, near Hohoe, is the highest waterfall in Ghana and drops in two stages. Mount Afadja, at about 885 metres, is the highest point in the country. Lake Volta, the reservoir behind the Akosombo Dam, is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world by surface area.
Why go
It is the only part of Ghana with real relief, and the only part where hiking is the point. The lower Wli falls are reached by a flat walk of about 40 minutes through the Agumatsa reserve, crossing the stream several times. The upper falls take two to three hours of steep climbing and are the better sight. Thousands of fruit bats roost on the cliff face. Afadja is a hard 45 to 90 minutes up. Tafi Atome nearby has a community-protected troop of mona monkeys.
When to go
The dry months, November to March, for footing on the upper trail and for road access. The falls carry far more water at the end of the rains in September and October, which is the better sight but the harder walk. Accommodation in the region is basic outside a handful of lodges near Wli and Akosombo.
Most people stay 2-3 nights.
