What it is
Around 4,570 square kilometres of Guinea savannah and woodland in the Savannah Region near Damongo. The main camp sits on an escarpment above two waterholes. Tamale, about 130 km east, is the nearest airport.
Why go
Elephants, and the fact that you walk. Guided walking safaris leave the camp morning and afternoon with an armed ranger and get close to elephant on foot, which very few parks in Africa permit as routine. There are also kob, waterbuck, warthog, baboon and roan antelope. Set expectations honestly: this is not East African game density. You will not see the big cats. Lion are listed for the park but effectively not seen.
When to go
December to April, the dry months, when animals come to the waterholes below the camp and the elephants are reliable. The road in from Tamale is tarred for most of its length now but the last stretch and the park tracks deteriorate badly in the June-to-September rains, when parts of the park close. Getting here is a commitment: fly to Tamale rather than driving from Accra, which takes most of two days.
