What it is
A ranch and resort on a high grassland plateau in the Sankwala Mountains near the Cameroon border, established as a cattle ranch in the 1950s. The access road climbs a series of eleven hairpin bends. A cable car runs the same ascent.
Why go
The temperature. It is the one place in southern Nigeria where the air is genuinely cold at night, and the grassland and cloud make it look nothing like the rest of the country. Walking trails, a waterfall, and a canopy walkway in the forest below. Note that the resort's condition has fluctuated considerably with ownership and funding; check what is actually operating before booking, including the cable car.
When to go
November to March for the road and the views; cloud sits on the plateau for much of the wet season. The drive from Calabar takes the better part of a day, so this is an add-on for people already in Cross River rather than a standalone.
