What it is
Livingstone sits about 10 km from the falls on the Zambian bank. The Knife-Edge Bridge crosses a gorge to a viewpoint directly opposite the Eastern Cataract, and a path drops to the Boiling Pot at the bottom. Livingstone Island, on the lip itself, is reached by boat.
Why go
This side gets you closer to the water than Zimbabwe does. At high water the Knife-Edge Bridge is a soaking, roaring walk through horizontal spray where you can barely open your eyes. It is also the side with Devil's Pool, a rock-rimmed pool at the very edge that you can sit in once the flow has dropped enough to be safe.
When to go
The two reasons to come want opposite months. For volume and spray, March to May, peaking in April. For Devil's Pool and Livingstone Island, low water, roughly mid-August to mid-January, with operators deciding day by day on the flow. Between September and December the Zambian side can dry back to a few streaks over bare rock. If the falls themselves are your reason for the trip and your dates are in that window, cross to Zimbabwe for the day or change the dates.
