What it is
The coast north of Swakopmund, where a cold sea meets a sand desert and the two make fog. The southern stretch, from the Ugab River mouth up through Torra Bay to Terrace Bay, is drivable with a park permit. The northern concession above the Hoanib is fly-in only and closed to private vehicles.
Why go
Cape Cross holds tens of thousands of Cape fur seals and you smell it long before you see it. Rusting hulls sit in the surf. This is a landscape destination, not a wildlife one. People either find it remarkable or find it two grey hours, and both reactions are fair.
When to go
Year round, and grey year round, with fog most mornings. Torra Bay's campsite opens only for the December and January fishing season. Fuel is scarce along this coast, so fill up in Swakopmund or Henties Bay and carry water.
Most people stay 1-2 nights.
