What it is
A small coastal town of pastel colonial buildings, bakeries and a jetty, with dunes starting at the edge of the last street. The Benguela current keeps the sea around 15C and pushes fog over the town most mornings. It burns off by late morning, or it does not.
Why go
It is where you stop moving for two days. Quad bikes and sandboards on the dunes, kayaking among Cape fur seals at Pelican Point near Walvis Bay 30 km south, scenic flights up the Skeleton Coast, and restaurants that are a relief after a week of lodge menus.
When to go
Any month. It is cool and grey year round and rarely passes 25C. Namibians fill it over the December holidays, so book ahead for those weeks. Do not come here to swim. The water is cold enough to hurt.
