What it is
A UNESCO-listed karst massif in the west where rain has eroded limestone into fields of razor-edged pinnacles, with canyons and dry forest between them. Visitors move through it on fixed ladders, via ferrata cables and suspension bridges, wearing a harness. Access is from Bekopaka, roughly 200 km north of Morondava, which takes eight to twelve hours by 4×4 and involves two river ferry crossings.
Why go
There is nothing else like it. The Grand Tsingy circuit is a half day of climbing, squeezing and traversing, and the Petit Tsingy is a shorter, easier version. Deciduous forest below holds Decken's sifaka and a lot of endemic reptiles.
When to go
Roughly May or June to November, and no other time. The access road and the river crossings become impassable in the rainy season, and the park closes for it, generally from around December through April; the exact reopening date shifts with the rains each year, so confirm with an operator rather than assuming. This is not a first trip to Madagascar. You need a head for heights, reasonable fitness and four full days of your itinerary just to get in and out.
