What it is
A depression of date palms and salt lakes about 50 km from the Libyan border, with its own Berber language and customs. The mud-brick Shali fortress stands ruined in the middle of town. The Temple of the Oracle, which Alexander is said to have consulted, sits on a rock above the palms. The Great Sand Sea starts at the edge of the oasis. Getting there means roughly 8 hours by road from Marsa Matruh on the Mediterranean, or about 10 hours from Cairo.
Why go
It is quiet, cheap, and nothing like the Nile Valley. Salt-lake swimming, hot springs, and 4×4 trips into the dunes. Worth it if you have two weeks or more and want somewhere with no tour buses.
When to go
October to April. Summer is above 40°C with no relief. Winter nights are cold. Be honest with yourself about the cost: two days of driving, in each direction, for a place that adds nothing to a first visit built around pyramids and temples. Save it for a second trip.
Most people stay 2-3 nights.
