What it is
Uganda's largest park, split by the Victoria Nile. The falls are the point where the entire river squeezes through a narrow cleft in the rock and drops around 45m.
Why go
Two views of one thing, and you want both: the boat upstream to the base of the falls, then the short steep climb at the top where you stand over the gap and get soaked by spray. North of the river, the Buligi plains hold giraffe, elephant, lion and Jackson's hartebeest.
When to go
December to February and June to September. It is a five to six hour drive from Kampala, usually broken at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, which is where Uganda's only rhinos live. Be aware that oil development is under way in and around the park: roads are being built, traffic has increased, and parts of the area look like a construction site.
Most people stay 2-3 nights.
