Nyerere National Park (Selous)

River and lake country in the south, best seen from a boat.

What it is

The northern part of what was the Selous Game Reserve, made a national park in 2019. The Rufiji River spreads into a chain of lakes and channels; beyond them it is miombo and open woodland.

Why go

Boat safaris, which change what a safari feels like: hippo, crocodile and elephant coming down to drink, seen at eye level from the water. Walking safaris are allowed here, which the northern parks mostly do not permit. It is also one of the better places anywhere for African wild dog.

When to go

June to October. Many camps close from March into May for the long rains, and it is hotter and more humid than the northern circuit all year. A short flight from Dar es Salaam, which is the easy way in.

Most people stay 3 nights.
